Many people know the phrase: with treatment, acute respiratory infections go away in a week, and without treatment in 7 days. The modern level of development of pharmacology makes it possible to be treated symptomatically, thereby increasing the quality of life during an illness.
But there are many biases and false beliefs in the treatment of ARI. Let’s consider the most common ones.

To “warm up” and sweat. In fact, general overheating of the body is what the virus needs! For many viruses multiply at a human body temperature above 38 C. That is why it is customary not to lower the temperature, conventionally to 38-38.5 C, since its own body raises it in order to fight the virus with various links of immunity, and already a higher temperature indicates that that the virus is provided with the conditions for active reproduction, it needs to be reduced, since there is too much of it in the body, so there was such a violent reaction to it. To facilitate the body’s work, you need to not overheat, because the temperature can rise too quickly, and this is an additional load on the cardiovascular, respiratory, immune and other systems of the body. In order for the immunity to work in full force of its capabilities, it is necessary that heat transfer prevails over heat production. That is, the increased body temperature created by the body is optimal for the fight against the virus, it did not turn into a pathological one, in which this very virus multiplies faster. That is why, up to certain numbers, a rise in temperature is normal and good, and already more than 38.5 C should be reduced with antipyretics, in which the body suffers and contributes to the rapid multiplication of the virus. But this needs to be in a room with flowing air, sufficiently humidified (50-70%) so that the body can give off excess heat without overheating.
The flu vaccine is ineffective because it must be given annually.
In fact, the influenza vaccine is developed annually by leading scientists who conduct extensive research and analyze data from more than 100 countries to predict which strains of the influenza virus will be most prevalent in the next season. Based on these results, influenza vaccines are being developed. Therefore, according to the WHO recommendation, the strain composition of vaccines changes annually and, accordingly, vaccinations provide protection during one influenza season from influenza itself and from acute respiratory infections, which are similar in structure to the influenza virus of the current season, and this is a big bonus not to get seriously ill not only with seasonal flu, but also the most common viruses that cause ARI in the current epidemiological season. The vaccine does not contain live components, it is completely safe for pregnant women in any trimester (the baby also receives immunity, which will act during the first months of his life). From 6 months, influenza vaccination is indicated for all groups of the population, especially children under 6 years of age and all chronic diseases, in contact with a large number of people. Vaccination against pneumococcus, HIB infection (leaders among the causative agents of pneumonia, otitis media, especially in children in children), meningococcus, COVID-19 will also be an effective way to avoid frequent complications after acute respiratory infections or not to get sick for several ailments at the same time. These vaccinations are mandatory and provided by the government in all developed countries of the world.
Cough is a sign of complications of acute respiratory infections.
A cough, predominantly moist, productive is a sure sign that the hygiene of the nasal cavities and throat was at a high level during the treatment of acute respiratory infections, that is, the nasal passages were moistened several times a day even in the absence of a runny nose (to ensure the movement of the ciliated epithelium in the nasal passages) and gargled so that nasal discharge released by the back wall of the oropharynx does not linger on the tonsils and does not cause their infection. The antitussive reflex prevents the penetration of saline solutions from the nasopharynx into the bronchial tree and by coughing provides cleansing of the bronchial tree. The phlegm secreted by the bronchi in response to the multiplication of the virus is a normal healing process. Antitussive drugs, the mucus that has accumulated, prevents its evacuation from the bronchopulmonary system, and expectorants stimulate the formation of this mucus, so only a doctor prescribes such drugs. So, a cough without a high fever with a satisfactory state of health that occurs 3-5 days after the first signs of a cold is a natural process of the body’s recovery. Therefore, it is important to drink a lot of fluids so that the secretion of the bronchial tree does not thicken and the cough stops faster.
A nebulizer will help you recover faster and avoid coughing.
This is not true. In all developed countries of the world, for more than 50 years, the nebulizer has been used only for bronchial asthma, obstructive bronchitis, stenosing laryngitis, bronchiolitis in order to quickly receive hormonal drugs or beta-agonists much less often than antibiotics, borzan and alpha. the alveoli to expand immediately, allowing the person to breathe. All other drugs should not be used with a nebulizer, since the bioavailability and efficacy of the drug has not been proven or does not exceed the oral route of administration. It is much more efficient to breathe humidified (50-70%) air (18-21 C). Inhalation with mineral water is prohibited, since they are not sterile, essential oils can burn the upper respiratory tract when heated and / or cause allergic reactions. Solutions and like decassan in world practice are used only for external treatment of medical carts, but by no means for inhalation, especially in pediatrics, as is often prescribed in Ukraine.
Antibiotics are a pledge and an effective argument for avoiding complications of acute respiratory infections and should be taken immediately or a few days after the onset of feeling unwell.
Antibiotics can quickly eliminate the symptoms of acute respiratory infections without affecting the multiplication of the virus in the body. The addition of a bacterial infection while taking an antibiotic without indications requires taking a second antibiotic, already according to indications. If each acute respiratory disease is treated in this way, in addition to the known general antibiotic resistance of the bacteria on planet Earth, there will also be a personal one, caused by their uncontrolled intake. If the patient and the attending physician (with an individual approach to each) have an understanding of the peculiarities of the course of acute respiratory infections, then complications are not difficult to avoid. There are certain “red flags”: a sharp or repeated rise in temperature over 39 ° C, shortness of breath at rest, pain in the ear, throat, abdomen, skin rash, discoloration of urine. This requires immediate follow-up examination and treatment based on its results.
Teas from viburnum, raspberries for colds – have no effect.
In fact, drinking 2.5-3 liters of liquid in case of a disease with natural vitamin C promotes rapid recovery, prevents capillary fragility, which suffers during the fight against the virus. Increasing the volume of fluid decreases the concentration of the virus in the blood and the development of inflammatory changes is less likely. The fiber in berries has an anti-inflammatory effect.
Multivitamins, echinacea – increase immunity.
Multivitamin complexes are becoming less popular in the prescriptions of evidence-based doctors, since they usually have a low vitamin content, some of them are water-soluble, others are fat-soluble, they should be taken at different times of the day. Such complexes leave the body in transit 90%. Correction of vitamin deficiencies should be established in the laboratory and treated specifically. Echinacea, if it works and if it stimulates, then everything, including allergic reactions. Also, in autoimmune diseases, it contributes to an increase in the level of antibodies of a chronic disease.
It is possible to reduce a certain link of immunity only with highly specialized drugs – immunosuppressants or acquired diseases that reduce it. Improve immunity – with a healthy lifestyle, sufficient motor regime, physical activity, a balanced varied diet and hardening (you can start with local and in the spring-summer period).
The best prevention of diseases are annual check-ups, dynamic monitoring of chronic diseases and the correct administration of acute respiratory infections.
