Donation in the treatment of infertility

In vitro fertilization (IVF) enables many infertile couples to conceive and give birth to a healthy child. But sometimes one or both partners do not have germ cells of sufficient quality to fertilize and achieve pregnancy in a cycle of assisted reproductive technologies. In such cases, the donation of oocytes and spermatozoa, which are carefully selected and have the best potential for conception, helps.

At the Reprolife, a Reproductive Medicine Clinic in Kyiv, germ cell donation services are available for couples and single women who wish to become mothers. The medical center guarantees full support at all stages, high effectiveness of infertility treatment, ethical attitude, and confidentiality of information about program participants.

What is oocyte donation?

The main factor in female infertility is a decrease in the supply of healthy eggs, which are necessary for the conception of a child. Physiological depletion of the ovarian reserve occurs after 35 years, and then, the ability to conceive naturally decreases.

The reason for the lack of oocytes can be premature exhaustion of the ovaries, endocrine diseases, ovarian neoplasms surgical interventions, chemotherapy, or radiation therapy. If it is not possible to get eggs, donor cells are used to conceive a child. They are fertilized in the IVF program for obtaining embryos and for further transfer of the embryo into the uterine cavity.

Terms of participation in the program for egg donors:

  • age 18-32 years;
  • presence of at least one healthy child;
  • absence of genetic diseases;
  • good health;
  • absence of bad habits (smoking, alcohol abuse).

Sperm donation

An insemination program using donor sperm is recommended if it is not possible to obtain the patient’s sperm. This situation occurs in the absence of spermatozoa in the ejaculate (azoospermia), a critical violation of morphology (teratozoospermia). Another reason to use the donation service is genetic diseases that can be transmitted to the future child. In IVF programs, sperm donation is used not only for couples, but also for women who do not have a male partner.

Sperm donors can be men who meet the following criteria:

  • age from 18 to 40 years;
  • good health;
  • presence of a healthy child;
  • absence of hereditary diseases;
  • absence of bad habits;
  • optimal indicators of spermogram (semen analysis)

Features of the donation program

Donors of reproductive material are provided with anonymity. Their personal data is known only to the staff of the clinic, which is directly involved in the program, and is not disclosed to third parties under any circumstances. When selecting donor cells, couples receive information about the donor’s height, weight, hair and eye color, blood group, education, and hobbies. Due to these data, the perfect phenotypic similarity with future parents is selected.

In the Center of Reproductive Medicine Reprolife, IVF with cell donation is performed in case of absolute infertility of one or both partners. In the second case, a double donation program is used: fertilization of a donor egg with donor sperm. This method allows you to become parents in the most difficult situations when it is impossible to use other methods of infertility treatment. The cost of services is calculated individually for each case.

How the donation program works

The first stage is a consultation in our clinic, during which the future donor receives all information about the program and specifies the amount of the financial reward. After discussing the details, the parties sign the contract.

The second stage is a complete medical examination of the donors. Diagnostics includes laboratory tests and instrumental methods that confirm the good condition of the reproductive system and the possibility of participation in the program. Genetic testing of the donor is mandatory to exclude the transmission of hereditary diseases. The clinic fully covers the cost of the examination before participating in the donation program.

The third stage is obtaining germ cells. The IVF donation program is different for men and women:

  • Men must submit a sperm sample in a special room of the medical center after preliminary preparation. Recommendations before sperm donation: sexual abstinence for 3-5 days, refusal of smoking and drinking alcohol, exclusion of thermal effects (hot baths, sauna), and excessive physical exertion.
  • Women undergo hormonal stimulation to get several eggs in one cycle. The oocyte donor regularly visits the clinic to monitor the growth of follicles using ultrasound (folliculometry), and on the appointed day, a reproductive specialist performs a follicle puncture to obtain mature oocytes. The obtained oocytes are immediately fertilized in the IVF program or frozen in a cryobank using vitrification technology. It is allowed to participate in the donation program several times if desired. The number of episodes and frequency of germ cell donation are determined individually. These questions should be discussed with a reproductive specialist.
