Donation of embryos
Embryo donation is a modern method of infertility treatment for patients who do not have their own germ cells in the IVF program. This method gives a woman the opportunity to carry and give birth to a child in cases where other assisted reproductive technologies are contraindicated or ineffective.
At the Reprolife Reproductive Medicine Clinic in Kyiv, there are two variants of the program: the use of already cryopreserved donor embryos and the obtaining of embryos after fertilization of approved donor eggs with donor sperm. The cost of treatment depends on the selected protocol.
Indications for embryo donation
Embryo donation service can be used by infertile couples if:
- there are no high-quality germ cells for in vitro fertilization (IVF);
- there were several unsuccessful IVF attempts;
- there were cases of termination of pregnancy due to genetic diseases in the future child;
- gene mutations or chromosomal diseases are present.
Embryo donation is also suitable for single women with infertility who want to have a child. The embryo donation program is provided if the woman does not have her eggs for fertilization with donor sperm.
An important requirement for starting the program is that the woman has no contraindications for bearing a child. If, according to the results of the preliminary examination, doctors reveal medical contraindications to pregnancy and childbirth, the couple is recommended to consider the possibility of surrogacy.
How does embryo donation work?
The first stage is a consultation with a reproducologist at the Reprolife Clinic, during which the possibilities of using donor cells and all stages of this IVF program are discussed. Next, the female recipient undergoes a reproductive examination and takes a standard set of tests to confirm the body’s readiness to bear a child.
Preparation for IVF involves taking hormonal drugs that improve the condition of the endometrium and increase the efficiency of successful embryo attachment.
Treatment of infertility using donor cells consists of the following stages:
- Selection of sperm and oocyte donors according to anonymous questionnaires.
- Obtaining germ cells and fertilization in embryological conditions.
- Cultivation of embryos to the blastocyst stage (within 5-7 days).
- Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT-A) to rule out chromosomal disorders.
- Preparation of the expectant mother’s body for embryo attachment and pregnancy (synchronization with the embryo).
- Transfer of a chromosomally healthy embryo into the uterine cavity (embryo transfer).
- Pregnancy confirmation test 14 days after embryo transfer.
When donating ready-made cryopreserved embryos, the program runs much faster. On the appointed day, the embryo is thawed and transferred to the woman’s uterine cavity (after preliminary preparation of the body for attachment of the embryo and carrying the pregnancy).
Embryo donation: price in Ukraine
The total cost of the infertility treatment program consists of the following services:
- Examination of the germ cell donor to exclude chromosomal disorders and carriers of genetic diseases, hormonal examination, excluding infections. Examination of the state of the body for the absence of contraindications to the possibility of participation in the germ cell donation program;
- Medical support of the oocyte donor;
- Obtaining oocytes from a donor during transvaginal puncture of follicles;
- In vitro fertilization and cultivation of embryos to the blastocyst stage;
- Freezing (vitrification) of embryos for the possibility of planning children even in the future without going through all the stages of IVF;
- Preimplantation genetic testing of embryos (PGT) to select a healthy embryo for transfer into the uterine cavity;
- Hormonal preparation of the female recipient for carrying a pregnancy;
- Embryo transfer – the transfer of an embryo into the uterine cavity.
Germ cell donors receive a financial reward for each portion of high-quality biological material. The cost of medical examination and preparation of candidates is fully covered by the clinic.
Couples who gave birth to a healthy child through IVF and decided to save unused embryos in the Reprolife Clinic’s cryobank can also become donors. This gives other infertile patients a chance to get a long-awaited pregnancy. All the specifics of the program are discussed with the clinic’s reproductive specialist. The transfer of biomaterial takes place after legal and medical documents are drawn up. We guarantee confidentiality for all program participants — neither donors nor recipients will learn personal information about each other.
