What is IVF with Donor Oocytes?
IVF with Donor Oocytes is a method of assisted reproductive technologies that helps women with insufficient or depleted ovarian reserve or other medical indications (low-quality oocytes, halted embryo development to the blastocyst stage, repeated absence of chromosomally healthy embryos for transfer, or female genetic and chromosomal disorders that make fertilization with their own eggs impossible) to become mothers.
Donor oocytes are fertilized with the sperm of the partner or a donor, and the resulting embryos are frozen. After receiving genetic testing results, one embryo is transferred into the future mother’s uterus, while the others are stored in the cryobank of our medical center.

Stages of IVF with Donor Oocytes:
1. Consultation with a Reproductive Specialist and Preparation
At this stage, the woman undergoes a primary consultation with a reproductive specialist, during which:
- The state of the reproductive system is assessed, and indications for using donor oocytes are considered.
- The optimal protocol for preparing the endometrium for successful implantation is selected.
- The legal and ethical aspects of using donor material are discussed.
2. Donor Selection
- The donor can be selected from the oocyte cryobank or through a fresh donor stimulation program.
- All donors undergo thorough medical, genetic, and psychological screening.
- The donor is chosen based on phenotypic characteristics (blood group, hair color, eye color, etc.) to match the future mother’s traits as closely as possible.
3. Fertilization of 8 Donor Oocytes and Culturing Embryos to the Blastocyst Stage
- Donor oocytes are fertilized with sperm from the partner or a donor under embryological conditions using the ICSI method.
- The resulting embryos are cultured for 5-6 days to the blastocyst stage.
- Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT-A) may be performed to exclude chromosomal abnormalities in embryos. For this, on the 2-3rd day of embryo development, an assisted laser hatch is performed to enable biopsy—taking a few cells from the trophoectoderm (future placenta) for genetic testing.
4. Freezing of Embryos and Further Storage in the Cryobank of Our Medical Center
In cases of genetic testing of embryos (PGT-A), we wait for the result for 2-3 weeks. After confirmation of a chromosomally healthy embryo for embryo transfer, the next important stage begins.
5. Endometrial and Female Body Preparation for Embryo Transfer and Implantation
- During this period, synchronization of the female body for successful embryo implantation takes place. The woman takes hormonal medications (estrogens, progesterone) to create an optimal endometrial condition for embryo reception.
- During folliculometry and hormonal tests, the reproductive specialist determines the day when the endometrial lining is ready for embryo implantation (usually the 19th-20th day of the menstrual cycle). These are the days when, under natural conditions, embryo implantation typically occurs in women of active reproductive age.
6. Embryo Transfer
- The reproductive specialist transfers the embryo into the uterus.
- The transfer is completely painless and is performed under ultrasound control with a full bladder.
7. Luteal Support and Pregnancy Confirmation Test
- Progesterone medication continues to support implantation.
- A pregnancy confirmation test (blood test for hCG) is performed 14 days after embryo transfer.
- Ultrasound is performed to confirm the visualization of the gestational sac in the uterine cavity.
Effectiveness of IVF with donor eggs
- High probability of pregnancy – 78% per IVF embryo transfer attempt at our reproductive clinic.
- Often, this program results in extra embryos being stored for the possibility of planning a second child without undergoing stimulation and repeat fertilization of donor eggs.
- Donor eggs are primarily used in women of advanced reproductive age (40+ years) or with a diminished and depleted ovarian reserve.
- Egg donors are carefully selected, which reduces the risks of genetic and medical complications.
