Who determines the sex of the child — the mother or the father?

This question often interests future parents. And the answer is quite simple — the sex of the future child is genetically programmed and determined by the combination of sex chromosomes the child receives from the father and the mother.

The female sex is determined by the presence of two X chromosomes (XX), whereas the male sex is determined by the combination of X and Y chromosomes (XY).

Unlike most cells in our body, which contain a full set of chromosomes, sex cells (eggs and sperm) contain only half of this set. All eggs carry only an X chromosome, while spermatozoa come in two types — with either an X or a Y chromosome, approximately in equal amounts.

The sex of the future baby depends precisely on which type of spermatozoon first reaches the egg during fertilization — the carrier of the X or Y chromosome:

X-sperm + X-egg = girl (XX)
Y-sperm + X-egg = boy (XY)

Thus, the sex of the child is determined by the father, more specifically — by the type of chromosome carried by the sperm that fertilizes the egg. The X chromosome means a girl, the Y chromosome means a boy. The egg has no choice; it always carries the X chromosome.

Can we influence the sex of the child before or during natural conception?

To date, there are no reliable and scientifically proven methods to influence the sex of the child during natural conception.

Despite numerous folk signs, diets, calculations of favorable days of the cycle, and so on — all these methods lack sufficient scientific basis and do not guarantee results.

Scientists continue research in this field. For example, the influence of polymorphism of certain genes responsible for the reproductive system on the tendency to have children of a particular sex in different families is being studied. It is hypothesized that some men have a higher likelihood of passing on sperm with a particular type of chromosome.

Perhaps in the future, science will be able to provide clearer answers or even allow a natural way to “choose” the sex of the child. But for now — it remains a matter of chance or nature.

Conclusion:
The sex of the child is determined by the father’s sperm — and so far we cannot influence this during natural conception. But whoever comes into your life — son or daughter — the most important thing is that the child is healthy and happy.
